Imaging Genetics

Imaging Genetics is the study of how individual genetic differences lead to differences in brain wiring (connections), structure, and intellectual function. Here at the Imaging Genetics Center, led by Paul Thompson, we investigate how genes and environment affect the brain, using high-angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI), and structural and functional MRI. We co-founded a worldwide imaging genetics consortium, called the ENIGMA Consortium, which is making rapid progress discovering genetic variants that affect brain integrity. ENIGMA recently performed the largest brain imaging study in the world - bringing togther 207 co-authors, from 125 institutions, to analyze genome-wide scans and MRI scans from 21,151 people. We also direct several mathematical and technical projects to improve methods to understand how gene networks affect the brain.     This paper was quite widely reported in the media. We found that fiber integrity is very highly genetically influenced; the same genes that influence IQ were also shown to influence fiber integrity in the brain.
